Love is all around you. It always is, even in the darkest of times.
Your focus of attention on distressing events prevents you from feeling that love. It recedes into the background until it disappears from your consciousness.

That is when you feel bereft, lost, anxious, alone, abandoned.
What is the remedy? It is simple, of course. Focus not on the unhappy events, but on the underlying Reality of Universal Love.

This is your reality, the one you create by and with your mind and your choice of thoughts.
Start with the focus on the Love that is everywhere, always surrounding and upholding, uplifting you. While holding yourself in that space, move on to living your life in the Now, the Here and Now. "Here" being wherever you are and whatever you are doing.
This is how you keep your center and your sanity. This is how you combat fear, anger, and despair. This is how you keep yourself untouched by current events, while still being completely cognizant of same.
You can't help them by being distressed or sad. You may feel this makes you a better and more sensitive person, but the true result is that it makes you a less stable person, emotionally and intellectually.
The way to help them, and the world/Universe at large, is to keep your focus on that sea of Love, and live in it as much of the time as you can manage. Let it slosh over onto others as appropriate. That's how the healing spreads.
That is how you uplift the world.
Because, my friends, that is why you are here. You chose to come here now to stand witness and to help.
It is time to get on the job, beloveds. Jump into the work, feel the Love, share it, and spread it in every way possible. - Without resorting to street preaching, or weirding people out! Those things will backfire, as will annoying and irritating them.
So, tread carefully, and love, love, love.
